When was the last time you headed up to the Northern section of the Katahdin Region? There’s so many places to hike, paddle, eat and stay. One of the oldest of these is Shin Pond Village in Mt. Chase. Although it was a stopping place long before then, visited by and lived in by previous Hill generations, Craig Hill bought the land in the fall of 1981 and started by building the main building, which included the store and restaurant.
And then, it grew…He bought 40 more acres and enlarged the store, added a game room, and a Laundromat; then, he starting building campsites and lodges for campers, hunters and fishermen. Once a place for logging and working in the woods, the logging roads created the roads that people use to get around today. The snowmobile trails were created on those same logging roads from East Millinocket to Oxbow, snowmobilers started coming through in the winter months, and suddenly, Shin Pond Village was a year-round place for fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, and most recently, ATVing. It’s a great place for weddings (July into September,) family reunions, camping, renting ATV’s or snowmobiles–depending upon the season, and just relaxing and enjoying the great Maine outdoors.
If you’re really lucky, Craig will be around to tell stories about when Walt Disney stayed there! In 2016, Craig’s son Blaine, his wife Elka, and their children returned home to contribute to the family business. In 2017 Shin Pond Village celebrated their 35th year in business.
