Welcome to the new Katahdin Woods and Waters Cross Country Ski Trails!
The Matagamon Trails can be accessed from the end of the Grand Lake Matagamon Road just past the Matagamon Wilderness Store and Cabins.
Old River Road Loop: (ORANGE DIAMOND BLAZES) appx. 5 miles from Parking area by bridge, mostly gentle ups and downs half of which goes along the East Branch of the Penobscot River. One caution section just before the Old River Road comes into the Oxbow Road there is a large beaver dam and flow age. Caution should be used as temps warm up. There is a large break and flow in the middle of the beaver flow. The groomer does not go across here. Best idea if the water is open is to turn around here and go back up river retracing your route , the views are amazing on the way back up too!
Thoreau Checkerberry Loop: (YELLOW DIAMOND BLAZES) appx. 4.2 miles from Oxbow road and Messer Pond -Orin Falls intersection to Oxbow road stay right where it intersects with the Old River Road Loop down to the intersection of the IAT on the Old Telos Tote Road. Take a right and head back up throughout the open Haskell Gate back to the Messer Pond Orin Falls Road which you turn right on and head back up to the Matagamon Parking Area.
ADVANCED ROUTES : IAT North and South RIVER (RED DIAMOND BLAZES) Matagamon Parking Area to Bowlin Pond Via the Messer Pond -Orin Falls Road through Haskell gate Old Telos Toe Road .
This route is APPX 10 miles from the Matagamon Parking Area to the bridge crossing the East Branch at Bowlin Camps. There are two spur trails off this route, Stair Falls Spur (.50 miles 1 way) and the Grand Pitch Spur (Ungroomed and appx .25 miles below the Grand Pitch Lean -to.) Haskell Rock Rapid can be easily seen from this route. More information can be found at the IAT website with additional maps and information. Due to wet areas , the trail may be rerouted or closed at times. Please stop in and get updated information from the Matagamon Wilderness Store.

For Your Safety: Winter conditions on these trails can change quickly. Come prepared with proper clothing, map and compass, potable water and common sense. DO not travel alone . Check in with the Matagamon Wilderness store when you depart and on your return. Icy and wet conditions may occur at any point along these trails. Exercise additional caution near wet areas and the rivers edge. Trails and rocks may be slippery. Cell phone service in this area is very limited.
